On this very day in history…

American poet Emily Dickinson was born in 1830.
Emily Dickinson (1830–86).

VI

IF I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin 5
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.

And speaking of the Nobel Prize, Jane Addams was the first American woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931, and Martin Luther King Jr., a prominent African-American civil rights leader, received it in 1964. The first African-American president, Barack Obama, received it today.

I think that I shall never see
A poem as lovely as a tree.

by Joyce Kilmer (born today 1886)

Don’t quit

An old favorite revisited…

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don’t give up though the pace seems slow–
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than,
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor’s cup,
And he learned too late when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out–
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit–
It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.

I went for a walk in the fall

I went for a walk in the fall
by William Visher

I went for a walk in the fall,
And that is not all.
I went across and down, over and around,
above and upon, across and among.
In the fall.

I saw fall and smelled fall and heard fall
and was touched by fall.
I went for a walk in the fall.

It’s a full moon tonight
And everything is just alright.

A poem for the season

It Is Fall After All
by William Visher

The leaves are dusting the ground
and changing from green to yellow and brown
It is fall after all

The kids are back in school
and dealing with books and dirty looks
It is fall after all

Summer is fading away
And soon won’t have anything much to say
It is fall after all

Winter will soon be here
With shorter days and weather drear
It is fall after all

The air is crisp and clean
The landscape rarely a prettier scene
It is fall after all.

Truer words were never spoken…sorry Ri. :(

Baby, baby
When we first met
I never felt something so strong
You were like my lover
And my best friend
All wrapped into one
With a ribbon on it
And all of a sudden
You went, left
I didn’t know how to follow
It’s like a shot
That spun me around
And now my heart left
I feel so empty and hollow

[Pre Chorus:]
And I’ll never give myself to another
The way I gave it to you
Don’t even recognize
The ways you hurt me
Do you?
It’s gonna take a miracle to bring me back
And you’re the one to blame

[Chorus:]
And now I feel like, oh
You’re the reason
Why I’m thinking
I don’t wanna smoke on
These cigarettes no more
I guess that’s what I get
For wishful thinking
I should’ve never let you enter my door
Next time you wanna go on and leave
I should just let you go on and do it
Cause now I’m using like I bleed

It’s like I checked into rehab and
Baby, you’re my disease
It’s like I checked into rehab and
Baby, you’re my disease

I gotta check into rehab
‘Cause baby you’re my disease
I gotta check into rehab
‘Cause baby you’re my disease

[Verse 2:]
Damn,
Ain’t it crazy when you’re love swept?
You’ll do anything for the one you love
‘Cause anytime that you needed me
I’d be there
It’s like you were my favorite drug
The only problem is
That you was using me
In a different way that I was using you
But now that I know, it’s not meant to be
You gotta go, I gotta ween myself off of you

[Pre Chorus:]
And I’ll never give myself to another
The way I gave it to you
Don’t even recognize
The ways you hurt me
Do you?
It’s gonna take a miracle to bring me back
And you’re the one to blame
